Abstract
Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic nephrectomy for ectopic dysplastic kidney.

Materials and Methods: Between August 2002 and October 2006, 6 girls with a mean age of 11.5 years (range: 6-18 years) presented with urinary incontinence accompanied by regular voiding since birth. Ultrasonography, intravenous pyelography and a 99mTc-DMSA renal scan showed the presence of only a single kidney in all cases. Computed tomography (CT) showed a dysplastic kidney definitely in five patients, structures suspicious of dysplastic kidney in 1 case. All patients underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy for an ectopic dysplastic kidney.

Results: Laparoscopy identified all ectopic dysplastic kidneys easily, even in one case which distrophic kidney could not be identified by preoperative imaging. Dysplastic kidneys and ureters were removed successfully in all 6 patients. Mean operative time was 91 min (60-115) with minimal intraoperative bleeding. Mean postoperative hospital stay was 3.5 days (3-4). No intraoperative complication was encountered. All patients became dry soon after the operation.

Conclusions: Laparoscopy can be a useful modality for the diagnosis and also safe and effective treatment for ectopic dysplastic kidney.
